1 / Sketch the Storage Before You Touch a Saw

Grab a tape and mark out every item that needs a home: set-top box, sound-bar, console, DVD stash, family board games. Then decide which belong on show and which you’d rather hide. A ten-minute sketch beats two hours of re-cutting plasterboard later.

• Use painters’ tape on the wall to map shelf heights.
• Leave 50 mm between TV base and top of first shelf.
• Plan one spare socket in each cabinet for future gizmos.

2 / Built-In Cabinets: Deep Storage That Disappears

Cabinets are the workhorses. We recess them flush with the stud frame so doors sit level with the paintwork. push-to-open hinges keep the front clean—no handles to clash with the screen.

Dan’s tip: Go 400 mm deep. Any shallower and board-game boxes refuse to stand upright.

3 / Floating Shelves for the ‘Show & Tell’ Pieces

Shelves frame the TV and break up solid panels. We cut hidden steel rods into the studs, then slide MDF sleeves over the rods for a no-bracket look. Perfect for photos, candles or that Lego Millennium Falcon you keep rebuilding.

• Stick to three shelves per side to avoid a busy feel.
• Run LED strip at the rear edge for a gentle glow.
• Finish with the same paint sheen as the wall so shelves blend in.

4 / Sneak in Hidden Drawers and Flip-Down Doors

Clients love a secret panel. We use push-latch runners under the bottom shelf: give it a tap and a slim drawer slides out, ideal for remote controls or a stash of charging cables.

For consoles, a flip-down door lined with acoustic cloth lets air flow while hiding the blinking lights. Pair it with our cable-hiding guide and you’ll never see a wire again.

5 / Balance Storage with Heat from an Electric Fire

Fancy a fire? Slot an integrated electric unit in the centre, then stack cupboards above and drawers below. We keep electrics on one stud bay and shelving on the next to stop heat warming your KitKats.
