Nothing wrecks a slick TV media wall faster than a snake pit of wires. I learned that the hard way on a job in Sheffield last month—granite-grey panels, tidy fireplace, then… wham, a tangle of HDMI leads hanging like jungle vines. Let’s make sure that never happens at your place.

Below are the same five cable-hiding tricks we’ve perfected over 20 years of building media walls across Pontefract, Doncaster, Wakefield and Sheffield. Pick the ones that fit your layout, or mix a few for a spotless finish.

1. Plan Your Socket Layout (before you lift a saw)

Grab a pencil, stand in front of the wall and mark where the TV, sound-bar, console and integrated fireplace will live. Now add two extra double sockets above and below your screen line. Spare outlets cost pennies now—cutting back into finished plaster later costs headaches.

• Keep mains power on one stud bay, low-voltage cables in the next bay.
• Run a 50 mm flexible conduit between bays so future cables slide through without fresh holes.

2. Hide Everything Inside Flexible Conduit

Think of conduit as a giant drinking straw for wires. We notch it into the stud work, feed your HDMI, Ethernet and optical leads through, then cap both ends with brush plates. If you upgrade your kit next year, the new lead glides through—no chisels, no swear jar.

Pro tip: use HDMI cables with detachable heads. The plug unscrews, making the cable slimmer and easier to fish through tight bends.

3. Install a Recessed AV Panel

A recessed panel sits flush with the plasterboard so plugs don’t poke the TV outward. We like the twin-gang models that hold power, aerial and data ports in one box. They cost about £25 and save you 25 minutes of swearing when a plug won’t tuck in.

4. Fit Brush Plates for “Occasional” Leads

Someone always wants to hook up a laptop or Nintendo Switch after you’ve closed the wall. A brush plate—literally a slot with bristles—lets odd cables poke through neatly then disappear again. Position one just below shelf height so you can hide the slack behind ornaments.

5. Gather & Strap Inside the Cavity

Finally, bundle surplus leads with Velcro ties and clip them to the stud frame. Leave a gentle loop for strain relief; tight bends shorten cable life. We run a quick phone torch test: no light bouncing off PVC in the cavity, job’s a good ’un.

Quick Checklist Before You Close the Wall

1. All cables labelled at both ends.
2. Spare conduit pulled through and taped.
3. Signal tested: TV, Wi-Fi, console, sound bar.
4. No power cables crossing signal cables.
5. Photo taken for future reference—your electrician will thank you.
