Bespoke media walls across Sheffield, Doncaster, Wakefield & South Yorkshire

One of the most common mistakes we see is poor socket planning. Homeowners end up with cables trailing across their beautiful new media wall, or worse—not enough sockets for all their devices.

Here’s exactly how many sockets you need, where to place them, and how to plan your electrical setup properly.

How Many Sockets Do You Need?

Short answer: 6–8 sockets minimum. Most people need more than they think.

Typical Socket Requirements

Device Quantity Notes
TV 1 Main power
Sky Box / Virgin Box 1 Or streaming device (Fire Stick, Apple TV, etc.)
Soundbar 1 Or AV receiver if you have surround sound
Gaming Console 1 PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch dock
Blu-ray / DVD Player 1 Optional, but some people still use these
Electric Fireplace 1 Dedicated circuit (if you have one)
Future Devices 1–2 Phone chargers, new tech, etc.
TOTAL 6–8 Minimum for most setups

Pro tip: Plan for more than you currently need. Technology changes, and you don’t want to regret not having enough sockets in 5 years.

Socket Placement: Where Should They Go?

Behind the TV (Main Socket Area)

This is where most of your devices will plug in. Position sockets:

  • Height: 30–50cm above the TV mounting point
  • Quantity: 4–6 sockets in this area
  • Configuration: Double or triple socket outlets (saves space)
  • Accessibility: Easy to reach behind the TV for plugging/unplugging

Why this height? It keeps cables out of sight behind the TV and receiver, but accessible if needed.

Recessed AV Panel

A recessed panel is a game-changer for cable management. It’s a flush-mounted box that sits in your wall cavity and holds:

  • Power sockets (2–3)
  • HDMI ports
  • Aerial socket
  • Ethernet port
  • USB ports

Cost: £100–£200 for the panel + installation

Benefit: Cables route through the wall cavity, creating a clean, professional look. See our guide on how to hide cables in your media wall.

Fireplace Socket (If Applicable)

If you’re adding an integrated fireplace, it needs its own dedicated socket:

  • Location: Behind or beside the fireplace niche
  • Circuit: Separate 13A circuit (not shared with other devices)
  • Certification: Must be Part P compliant

Additional Sockets (Optional)

Consider adding sockets for:

  • Phone charging: 1–2 sockets at seating height (for convenience)
  • Future expansion: 1–2 spare sockets for new devices
  • Lighting circuits: If you’re adding LED lighting, you may need additional circuits

Socket Height Guide

Socket Type Height from Floor Purpose
Main AV Sockets 1.2–1.5m Behind TV, for receivers and devices
Fireplace Socket 0.3–0.5m above fire Dedicated power for electric fire
Charging Sockets 0.4–0.6m At seating level for phone/tablet charging
Spare Sockets 1.2–1.5m Future-proofing for new devices

Wiring & Cable Management

Conduit Installation

Professional cable management uses conduit (plastic tubing) to route cables through the wall cavity:

  • Cost: £150–£300
  • Benefit: Cables stay organised, protected, and hidden
  • Installation: Run conduit through stud wall before plasterboard goes up
  • Sizing: 20mm conduit for standard AV cables

Cable Routing Best Practices

  • Separate power from data: Keep power cables away from HDMI/ethernet to avoid interference
  • Use cable ties: Bundle cables neatly inside the conduit
  • Label everything: Mark each cable so you know what it is
  • Leave slack: Don’t pull cables too tight; leave 10–15cm of slack for future adjustments
  • Plan for growth: Use larger conduit (25mm) to allow for additional cables later

Electrical Safety & Certification

Part P Compliance

All electrical work must be done by a certified electrician and comply with Part P Building Regulations.

This includes:

  • New socket circuits
  • Cable routing through walls
  • Testing and inspection
  • Certification documentation

Why it matters: Poor electrical work is a fire hazard and voids your home insurance.

Electrical Cost Breakdown

  • Socket installation: £80–£150 per socket
  • Conduit & routing: £150–£300
  • Recessed AV panel: £100–£200
  • Testing & certification: £100–£150
  • TOTAL: £300–£800 (depending on complexity)

Socket Planning Checklist

Before your installer starts work, confirm:

  • ☐ How many devices will you plug in? (List them)
  • ☐ Do you want a recessed AV panel? (Recommended)
  • ☐ Are you adding an electric fireplace? (Needs dedicated circuit)
  • ☐ Do you want charging sockets at seating height?
  • ☐ Should we plan for future devices? (Add 1–2 spare sockets)
  • ☐ Do you want conduit for cable management?
  • ☐ Will you need HDMI, aerial, or ethernet ports?
  • ☐ Is your electrician Part P certified?

Common Socket Planning Mistakes

Mistake 1: Not Enough Sockets

Problem: You end up with extension leads trailing across your wall.

Solution: Plan for 6–8 sockets minimum, plus 1–2 spares.

Mistake 2: Sockets in the Wrong Place

Problem: Sockets are too low, too high, or in awkward positions.

Solution: Plan socket placement before framing starts. Work with your installer to get it right.

Mistake 3: No Cable Management

Problem: Cables are visible, tangled, and messy.

Solution: Invest in conduit and a recessed AV panel. It’s worth the extra cost.

Mistake 4: Mixing Power & Data Cables

Problem: Electrical interference causes picture/sound issues.

Solution: Route power cables separately from HDMI and ethernet.

Mistake 5: Forgetting the Fireplace Circuit

Problem: If you add a fireplace later, you don’t have a dedicated socket.

Solution: Plan for a fireplace socket even if you’re not adding one now.

Real-World Socket Layout Example

4m Media Wall with TV, Soundbar, Sky Box, Gaming Console, Fireplace

  • Main AV area (behind TV): 6 double sockets (12 individual outlets)
  • Fireplace socket: 1 dedicated socket (separate circuit)
  • Charging sockets (seating level): 2 sockets
  • Recessed AV panel: HDMI, aerial, ethernet, USB
  • Conduit: 25mm through wall cavity for future expansion
  • TOTAL: 9 sockets + recessed panel

Future-Proofing Your Media Wall

Technology changes fast. To future-proof your setup:

  • Install larger conduit: 25mm instead of 20mm (allows for more cables later)
  • Add spare sockets: 1–2 extra outlets for new devices
  • Plan for smart home: Consider WiFi, smart lighting, and voice control needs
  • Use a recessed panel: Makes it easy to add new connections later
