A well-built media wall feels solid, hides every cable and stays crack-free for years. The secret? Choosing the right media wall materials before the first screw bites. Below we walk through the boards, battens and skins we use every day at Media Wall Master, so you can decide what belongs in your living room.
1. Timber Studwork: The Skeleton
Your TV, sound bar and maybe an integrated fireplace will all hang on this frame, so strength matters. We reach for 38 × 89 mm kiln-dried CLS timber:
- Straight, planed edges for tight joins.
- Factory-treated to resist moisture and warp.
- Slots neatly into standard 400/600 mm stud spacing.
Dan’s tip: If your wall sits on a concrete floor, lift the base plate on a slab of DPM offcut. No damp, no rot.
2. Board Options: MDF vs Plasterboard vs Plywood
2.1 MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard)
Pros: smooth finish, easy to rout for cable slots, soaks up spray paint like a dream. Cons: heavier than plasterboard, needs sealing on fire recesses.
2.2 Plasterboard
Pros: light, cheap, fire-rated versions available, mates with skim plaster for a seamless room blend. Cons: edges crumble if over-drilled; not fond of high-humidity rooms.
2.3 Plywood
Pros: bullet-proof screw hold, ideal backer if you plan to hang a heavy 75-inch set. Cons: wood grain telegraphs through paint unless you add a skim coat or veneer.
3. Heat Zones and Fire Safety Boards
Planning a three-sided electric fire? Switch the first 150 mm of board above and beside the unit to 12 mm fire-rated plasterboard. It shrugs off surface heat and keeps Building Reg officers happy.
We also leave a 20 mm air gap behind the fire cassette and drill vent holes at high and low points. Warm air rises, cool air sneaks in below—simple physics, silent protection.
4. Cladding and Finish Layers
Once the skeleton stands firm, add personality. Popular skins right now:
- Stone-effect porcelain tiles – 6 mm sheets keep weight down.
- Micro-cement – trowelled in two coats for a matte, modern vibe.
- Slatted oak strips – hides speaker fabric while letting sound flow.
Whichever finish you pick, keep wall depth under 300 mm in modest rooms. You want storage, not a wardrobe sticking out.
5. Wiring Channels and Access Panels
No material choice matters if cables run wild. We notch 50 mm flexible conduit into stud bays and cap cable exits with brush plates. Add a small access hatch low down, painted to match the wall, and you can swap a HDMI without drilling.
