A media wall hides cables, tidies up the room, and looks great. But it also encloses your AV equipment in a confined space — and that equipment generates heat. Heat that has nowhere to go shortens the lifespan of amplifiers, games consoles, Sky boxes, and streaming devices, and it can cause shutdowns and reliability problems. Here’s what to plan for, and how to design it out from the start.

Why heat matters in a media wall build

Modern AV equipment is designed to operate within a temperature range. When the ambient temperature around a device climbs above that range — because it’s in a closed box with no airflow — the device protects itself by throttling performance or shutting down entirely. Over time, repeated overheating shortens the lifespan of internal components: capacitors, processors, and hard drives all degrade faster when they run hot consistently.

In a media wall, the problem is particularly relevant for equipment stored in closed sections — behind doors, or in cavities with no openings. A sky box sitting on an open shelf is fine; the same Sky box sitting in a sealed cavity with warm air building up around it is significantly less fine.

For most domestic setups — a Sky box, Apple TV or Fire Stick, and perhaps a games console — passive ventilation (simply leaving openings for air to move through) is enough. For more demanding setups — AV receivers, multiple gaming consoles, home cinema amplifiers — you need to think more carefully.

Watch out: Streaming sticks and small devices like Apple TV are particularly prone to overheating in enclosed spaces because they have no active cooling of their own. If you’re fitting one behind the TV in a sealed recess, leave an opening for air to escape — even a small gap makes a material difference.

Which equipment generates the most heat?

Not all AV equipment runs equally hot. As a rough guide:

AV receivers are the most commonly overlooked problem. A quality amplifier running at volume can generate substantial heat and needs at least 100mm of clearance above it and a path for hot air to escape. Placing one in a sealed media wall cavity is a recipe for reliability issues.

Games consoles — particularly the PS5 and Xbox Series X — have large cooling fans built in, but those fans need something to push hot air into. An enclosed cavity lets the hot exhaust air recirculate back into the device’s intake, which progressively raises the internal temperature even with the fan running at full speed.

Ventilation strategies for a media wall

There are three main approaches, ranging from simple to more involved:

Open shelf storage

The simplest and most effective solution — don’t enclose the equipment at all. Open shelf sections in the media wall allow equipment to radiate heat directly into the room air, which has effectively infinite capacity to absorb it. There’s no installation cost, no maintenance, and no noise.

The tradeoff is aesthetic: you can see the equipment. For most families this is entirely acceptable — Sky boxes and consoles are in use regularly and hiding them behind doors adds friction to day-to-day use. If you want things out of sight, you need to think about ventilation more carefully.

Passive ventilation (slots and vents)

Passive ventilation uses openings in the media wall — typically vent grilles, decorative slots, or perforated sections — to allow warm air to rise out of the cavity naturally and cooler room air to enter from below. This relies on convection: warm air is lighter than cool air and rises, creating a gentle airflow through the cavity if there are openings at both the bottom and top.

For passive ventilation to work, you need:

  • Low-level inlet openings — grilles or slots near the bottom of the equipment cavity allow cooler air to enter.
  • High-level outlet openings — openings near the top of the cavity (or at the rear if the cavity backs onto a wall with space) allow warm air to escape.
  • Adequate opening area — larger openings move more air. The exact size depends on equipment heat output, but as a rough guide, 150–200 cm² of total vent area (combined inlet and outlet) is a reasonable starting point for a single-cabinet with moderate equipment.

Passive ventilation is quiet (no fans), maintenance-free, and works continuously. It’s the standard approach for most domestic media walls with normal AV equipment.

Active ventilation (fan extraction)

For setups with high-output equipment — a full AV receiver, or multiple gaming consoles — a small fan system can be fitted inside the media wall cavity to actively move air through. These systems typically run on 12V DC (quiet and low-energy) and use a thermostatic controller that switches the fan on when the internal temperature climbs above a set threshold.

Fan systems add a small amount of noise — audible if the equipment is in a quiet listening environment but barely perceptible in a normal living room. They need a power supply and are best wired at the build stage rather than retrofitted.

Proprietary AV rack ventilation systems (such as those from AC Infinity or similar brands) are available as drop-in solutions — these are designed specifically for AV furniture and include fan trays, controllers, and temperature sensors. They can be fitted into an existing media wall as long as the cavity dimensions accommodate them.

Build tip: If you’re having a media wall built with a closed equipment section, ask for a spare conduit or cable run from the equipment cavity to the nearest socket, even if you’re not fitting a fan now. It means if you decide you need active ventilation later, you have a power route without cutting into the finished wall.

How ventilation affects your media wall design

Ventilation needs to be factored into the design of the media wall before the build starts, not added as an afterthought. Several design decisions interact with it:

Cavity dimensions

Equipment needs clearance to breathe — not just space to physically fit, but space for air to circulate around it. A tight cavity that leaves 10mm around a Sky box may be fine thermally; a tight cavity around an AV receiver almost certainly isn’t. As a guide, allow at least 100–150mm of headroom above any device that runs noticeably warm.

Door and front panel design

If you want doors on the equipment section — for a clean look with everything out of sight — the doors need to incorporate ventilation. Perforated door panels, louvred grilles, or a deliberate gap at the top and bottom of the door frame all allow airflow while keeping the look tidy. Solid doors with no openings trap heat effectively and are best avoided for anything generating significant warmth.

Cable management and air blockage

A cable bundle running through a cavity can partially block airflow channels, particularly in a narrow cavity. Neat cable management — cables routed to the sides of the cavity rather than across it — keeps the air path clear. This is another reason to think through cabling at the design stage: poorly managed cables don’t just look messy, they affect thermal performance too.

Electric fireplace proximity

If your media wall includes an integrated electric fireplace, the fireplace itself adds a heat source to the wall structure. Quality electric fires are designed to vent their heating element safely, but the general warmth in the wall cavity is something to account for if equipment is stored nearby. Most media wall designs keep the equipment section physically separate from the fire section — worth confirming with your installer.

Signs your media wall has a heat problem

If your media wall is already built and you’re concerned about heat, look for these signs:

  • Devices shutting down unexpectedly or dropping to low-performance modes during extended use — this is the device’s thermal protection activating.
  • The media wall cavity feels noticeably warm even when equipment has only been running for a short time.
  • Fan noise from devices is louder than usual — the device’s internal fan is running harder to compensate for higher ambient temperatures.
  • Error messages related to overheating — some devices (PS5, Sky Q) will display explicit temperature warnings.

If you’re experiencing these, the most practical fix for an existing closed-cavity build is to fit a vent grille — cut into the face of the media wall and covered with a decorative grille plate. It’s a small modification with significant impact. Active fan systems are also retrofittable if passive vents aren’t sufficient.

FAQs: Media Wall Heat and Ventilation

Do I need ventilation in a media wall if my TV is just wall-mounted and there’s no equipment inside?

If the TV is the only thing and there’s no enclosed equipment cavity, ventilation isn’t a concern. TVs themselves vent heat from the back, and a wall-mounted TV in an open alcove or recessed bay allows that heat to disperse naturally. The ventilation issue is specifically about enclosed cavities with AV equipment generating heat inside them.

Can I put a Sky box or streaming device behind the TV in the wall?

Yes, with care. Behind-TV recesses are common in media wall builds and work well for small devices like streaming sticks and small-format Sky boxes. The key is leaving some airflow — even a gap at the top of the recess, or a small vent grille, makes a significant difference compared to a fully sealed space. A streaming stick in a sealed recess with no airflow is the highest-risk configuration.

Can I put a games console (PS5, Xbox) inside a closed media wall section?

It’s technically possible but needs proper planning. The PS5 and Xbox Series X both have powerful cooling fans designed to move a lot of air — that air needs somewhere to go. A closed section with passive vents (grilles at top and bottom giving sufficient opening area) can work. Active fan ventilation is a better choice for gaming-heavy households where the console runs for long sessions. Open shelving is the simplest reliable option.

How do I add ventilation to an existing media wall?

Fitting a vent grille to an existing media wall involves cutting an opening in the boarding, fitting a backing box or frame, and fitting a decorative grille over it. A joiner or competent DIYer can do this with the right tools. The grille needs to be positioned at the top of the cavity for warm air outlet — add a matching low inlet grille for convection to work effectively. Active fan kits are also available as bolt-on solutions where there’s already a power source accessible.

Do ventilation grilles look messy?

Not if specified properly. Decorative grille plates in a range of finishes (brushed steel, painted, brass) are available in sizes from 100mm to 300mm, and a well-specified grille fitted flush with the wall face looks intentional rather than improvised. Louvred door panels are another option that integrates venting into the door design. Most homeowners report that ventilation grilles are far less noticeable than they expected.

Does an electric fireplace in a media wall make the equipment hotter?

A quality electric fire is designed to direct its heat output into the room, not into the media wall structure. The wall cavity around the fire will be warmer than an unheated cavity, but modern electric fires with enclosed fireboxes limit the heat conducted into the structure. Keeping the equipment section physically separated from the fire section — as is standard in most media wall designs — minimises any interaction between the two.

Is there a specific temperature to aim for inside a media wall equipment cavity?

Most consumer AV equipment is rated to operate up to 35–40°C ambient temperature. The goal isn’t to hit a specific number, but to ensure temperatures inside the cavity don’t significantly exceed the room temperature. If the room is 20°C and the cavity is 38°C, that’s a problem. If the room is 20°C and the cavity is 24°C, that’s fine. Adequate ventilation keeps the cavity close to room temperature.
