Timber stud vs metal stud: which should you use?
Most media walls are built from one of two frame types. Both work, but they suit different situations.
Timber stud frames
Timber (usually 70mm or 100mm C16 construction timber) is the most common choice for domestic media walls. It is easy to work with, accepts fixings readily, and handles modifications well once built.
Timber is the natural choice if you are building into an existing room with standard floor-to-ceiling heights and a flat backing wall. If you would rather box the frame into the ceiling with a soffit or bulkhead above the screen, that is our bespoke ceilings and bulkheads work. Metal stud frames (CW/UW sections)
Metal stud systems — typically 70mm or 100mm CW sections with UW floor and ceiling tracks — are often used in commercial builds but are increasingly common in domestic media walls, particularly where the wall needs to be very slim or where moisture is a consideration.
Metal stud frames are lighter than timber, do not warp, and are quick to assemble. They require specialist fixings for heavier loads like TV mounts, which is an important consideration.
For most UK living rooms, 70mm or 100mm timber studs at 400mm centres work well. Go 100mm if you need to run significant cabling inside the wall or want to install an electric fire.

All electrical work inside the frame — including adding or relocating sockets — requires a qualified electrician. This is not a DIY task. Any work on the mains supply must be certified under Part P of the Building Regulations.

Step-by-step: how the frame goes together
1. Mark out the frame position
Use a spirit level and pencil to mark where the new wall will sit. Mark the floor track position, wall fixing points, and ceiling line. Before drilling anything, check for hidden pipes and cables behind the existing wall using a cable and pipe detector.
2. Fix the sole plate and head plate
The sole plate (floor track) and head plate (ceiling track) define the boundary of the frame. Fix these using appropriate anchors — frame fixings into a concrete floor, or screws into floor joists for a timber floor. Both must be level and parallel before you proceed.
3. Set the vertical studs
Vertical studs run between the sole plate and head plate, typically at 400mm centres. Fix top and bottom using screws or frame clips. Every stud should be plumb — check with a spirit level as you set each one.
4. Install noggings for TV mount support
Noggings are horizontal timbers fixed between vertical studs. They add rigidity and — critically — provide secure fixing points for the TV wall bracket. The TV mount must land on timber or a dedicated mounting board, not on plasterboard alone.
Mark the intended TV height before the frame goes up and position noggings accordingly. A 15–18mm OSB or plywood board screwed across multiple studs at TV height gives the most reliable mount.
5. Route conduit and cabling
Before boarding, run all conduit through the frame. Keep power cables and signal cables in separate conduits to avoid interference. Leave conduit ends accessible at the bottom of the frame where equipment will sit, with enough slack to reach connection points.
6. Fit the plasterboard
Plasterboard goes on the face of the frame using drywall screws at 150mm centres into studs and noggings. Joints between boards should fall on a stud. Tape and joint, or leave ready for a skim coat of plaster for a smooth painted finish.
Use moisture-resistant plasterboard if the media wall is against an external wall or in a room with higher humidity levels.
TV mount support: getting it right
The TV mount is the most structurally important detail in the entire frame. A 65-inch TV on a full-motion bracket puts significant and repeated load on the wall — all of it needs to transfer into timber, not plasterboard.
Options for TV mount support

Mounting board: Fix a 15–18mm sheet of plywood or OSB across the stud frame at TV height. This spreads load across multiple studs and gives a large, reliable target area for the bracket bolts.

Doubled-up studs: Position two studs side by side at the TV width and bolt the bracket into both. Works well for fixed and tilt brackets.

Through-bolts into studs: Long coach bolts through the plasterboard and into solid timber, with large washers behind, give a very strong connection for heavier screens or articulating brackets.
Always verify the bracket’s VESA rating matches or exceeds your TV weight, and check the bracket’s maximum load rating with its manufacturer before installation.
Integrating a fireplace into the frame
If your media wall includes an electric fireplace, the frame must be planned around it from the start. Most electric fire inserts require a dedicated recessed void sized precisely to the fire’s specifications.
The frame around a fireplace void must be structurally self-supporting — the opening cannot span unsupported plasterboard. A timber lintel or header above the void carries the load from the studs above it. Heat-rated materials must be used directly around the fire opening; standard plasterboard is not suitable immediately adjacent to a heat source.

Common mistakes when building a media wall frame
Not checking for hidden services first
Drilling into a hidden pipe or cable is a serious safety risk and an expensive repair. Always scan the existing wall with a detector before marking or fixing anything.
Undersizing the sole plate fixings
The sole plate takes the full vertical load of the frame. Inadequate fixings — especially into a suspended timber floor — create a frame that flexes or shifts. Use frame fixings rated for the load and fix into joists, not just floorboards.
No solid support for the TV mount
The single most common issue we see when taking on projects started by others. Plasterboard alone will not support a TV bracket under repeated load. Always build solid timber support into the frame before boarding.
Cabling too close to the plasterboard face
Cables run through the frame should be set back at least 50mm from the face, or run in conduit, to protect them from nails and screws during boarding and any future fixing work.
Boarding before checking everything is level
Once the boards are on, errors in the frame become expensive to fix. Check every stud is plumb and every nogging is level before any plasterboard goes up.

Building a basic stud frame is within the abilities of a competent DIYer with the right tools and some carpentry experience. The electrical work inside is not — this must be done by a qualified electrician, and any connection to the mains must be certified.
