The Hidden Costs of a Cheap Media Wall

Seen someone offering a full media wall install for £399? Looks tempting, doesn’t it? Here’s the truth: those bargain jobs usually end up costing more in the long run. Not always in money — sometimes in hassle, mess, or having to rip it out and start again. If you’re shopping around for prices, here’s what to look out for before choosing the cheapest quote.

Cheap Materials = Short Lifespan

Budget installs often cut corners on the stuff behind the scenes:
  • Thin timber that wobbles under the TV
  • No fire protection or heat-safe materials around the fire
  • Basic plasterboard that cracks within months
You won’t always see the difference at first — but give it 6 months, and it starts to show.

Poor Wiring = Safety Risk

Wiring’s a big one. We’ve seen some shocking jobs: extension leads hidden in walls, unlabelled circuits, no fused spurs, or TV power cables tied together with tape. It’s not just messy — it’s dangerous. A proper install should have safe, hidden, and future-proof wiring built in by someone who knows what they’re doing.

No Framework Strength

Media walls need solid studwork. That’s what holds the TV, fire, and shelves in place. Cheap builds often skip bracing or use thin battens to save time and cost. The result? Walls that bounce, bracket screws that pull loose, and cracks around the fire opening.

Hidden Extras Add Up

That low headline price? It usually doesn’t include things like:
  • TV mounting
  • Fireplace unit
  • Plastering and painting
  • Lighting or cable management
So you end up paying more than expected — and still have to finish bits yourself.

No Aftercare, No Support

Cheap fitters are often here today, gone tomorrow. If anything goes wrong — a fire fault, a loose bracket, a lighting issue — there’s no one to call. With a trusted installer, you get someone who’ll pick up the phone and sort it. That support matters.

Time Is Money Too

We’ve rebuilt dozens of media walls that were rushed or bodged the first time. So what looked like a bargain turned into:
  • Paying twice
  • Living with dust and disruption again
  • Waiting longer to finally enjoy it

So What Should You Pay?

It depends on size, features, and finish — but a good quality full build (TV mount, fire opening, lighting, cabling, plastering) will usually start from around £1,500–£2,000 and go up from there for more complex setups. You’re not just buying a wall. You’re paying for proper planning, solid construction, tidy electrics, and a finish that lasts.
