Want your media wall to really shine? LED lighting takes your setup from “looks nice” to “wow, look at that.”
It’s one of the most affordable ways to upgrade the finish — and when it’s done right, it completely transforms how the space feels in the evening. Get it wrong, though, and you end up with glaring strips, dead zones, or wiring that looks like an afterthought.
Here’s everything you need to know about LED lighting for a media wall — types, colour temperature, controls, installation, and what it actually costs.
Types of LED lighting for a media wall
LED strip lights
The most popular option by a long way. LED strip lights are flexible, cut to length, and can be hidden behind trim, coving, or shelving for a clean glow with no visible source.
- Available in warm white, cool white, RGB, RGBW, and tunable white
- Controlled by remote, app, or wall switch — or integrated with smart home systems
- Dimmable and, with RGB, colour-changeable
- Come in 12V and 24V variants (24V is better for longer runs — less voltage drop)
We fit these into routed aluminium channel profiles before the wall is boarded up — the diffuser cover on the channel hides the individual LEDs and gives a smooth, continuous line of light rather than a dotted strip. Much cleaner result.
COB LED strips (the premium option)
COB stands for Chip on Board. Instead of individual diodes spaced apart, COB strips are a continuous line of tiny chips packed tightly together — no hotspots, no dots, just a seamless glow.
They’re the choice for high-end media wall builds where the lighting is going to be a feature in itself. Slightly more expensive than standard SMD strips, but the visual difference is significant, especially in alcove coves or behind the TV recess where the strip sits close to a visible surface.
LED puck lights and recessed downlights
Small round spotlights, surface-mounted or recessed into alcove shelving. Where strip lights provide ambient glow, puck lights add targeted illumination — picking out ornaments, books, speakers, or decorative items on shelves.
- Recessed versions give the cleanest look — flush with the shelf surface
- Usually 1–3W each; wired in series to a single driver for wall-switch control
- Best planned at the build stage so power can be run inside the frame

Colour temperature: which is right for your room?
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K). It determines whether your LEDs look warm and cosy or clean and bright. For a media wall, this decision matters more than people expect.

Our recommendation for most homes: 3000K for ambient strip lighting, and 4000K only if you specifically want a brighter spot effect in display alcoves. Avoid mixing warm and cool white light sources in the same wall — it creates an unsettled look that’s difficult to photograph and live with.
RGB, RGBW, and tunable white — which should you choose?
White LED — single colour temperature (e.g. 3000K). Clean, timeless, works in any room. The right choice for most builds where lighting is about atmosphere, not spectacle.
RGB LED — generates colour from red, green, and blue diodes. Creates full-colour effects but the “white” mode looks slightly off, because true white needs all three channels at full power which tends to read as a faintly coloured glow rather than clean white. Fine for accent use, less good if you want white day-to-day.
RGBW LED — adds a dedicated white diode alongside the RGB channels. The best of both: clean white for everyday use, full colour when you want it. This is what we’d spec for a gaming room, a family living room, or anyone who wants colour capability without compromising on the daily white performance.
Tunable white (CCT-adjustable) — shifts between warm and cool white without producing colour. Lets you change the mood from cosy warm in the evening to crisp neutral in the afternoon. No colour, but more flexibility than fixed-temperature strips. A good fit for rooms that serve multiple purposes through the day.
Control options
Depending on your setup and how you use the room:
- Basic remote control — on/off, brightness, colour. Simple and reliable. Included with most strip kits.
- WiFi app control — manage lighting from your phone or tablet. No hub needed on most modern systems.
- Voice control — works via Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri through a compatible WiFi or smart home setup.
- Wall-mounted dimmer switch — the cleanest option for a hardwired installation. No remote, no app — just a switch on the wall like any other light.
If you’ve already got smart home gear, we can integrate the LEDs directly. If you just want it to work without a learning curve, a wall dimmer or a basic remote is the better call.

How we install LED lighting in a media wall
The installation approach makes as much difference as the products themselves. Here’s how we do it.
Aluminium channel profiles. We don’t stick strips directly to timber or MDF — this causes visible hotspot dots and makes the strip obvious when it’s lit. Instead, we rout channels into the frame and fit the LED strip inside a purpose-made aluminium extrusion with a frosted diffuser cover. The result is a smooth, continuous line of light with no individual LEDs visible.
First-fix wiring. All power runs go inside the wall frame before it’s boarded. LED drivers (transformers) sit in a ventilated void — not boxed in, because they generate some heat. Adding LED lighting after a wall is built means surface-mounted trunking, which always looks like an afterthought. The time to plan it is before a single board goes on. Power injection for longer runs. LED strips longer than around 4–5 metres can show voltage drop — the far end of the strip goes noticeably dimmer. We power inject at the midpoint on any run over that length, which keeps brightness even from end to end.
Plug-in vs hardwired drivers. Plug-in transformers are faster to install and easier to replace. Hardwired drivers (connected to the lighting circuit) are cleaner, allow wall-switch control, and are the right choice for anything intended to be permanent. We default to hardwired on full media wall builds.
How much does media wall LED lighting cost?
Costs vary depending on the type of strip, how it’s controlled, and how much of the wall is lit.

For a typical media wall with strip lighting behind the TV recess, shelf uplighting, and alcove puck spots, materials alone usually come to £80–£200. Professional installation is most cost-effective when planned as part of the full media wall build — adding LED lighting as a standalone job after the fact costs more because it involves opening up sections of the wall.
LED lighting layout ideas
Some of the setups we build most often:
- TV backlight — LED strip running around the inside of the TV recess. Reduces eye strain when watching in a dark room and adds depth to the wall. Usually 3000K warm white.
- Shelf uplighting or downlighting — strip fitted to the underside or rear of floating shelves, washing light either upward or downward across the shelf face. Works especially well in alcoves. See the alcove ideas guide for more on this.
- Fire surround glow — strip running behind the fire trim or in the recess around the cassette. Warm amber or red enhances the flame effect, particularly on modern electric fires.
- Coving uplighting — strip fitted into coving at the top of the media wall, washing light upward onto the ceiling. Adds height to the room and gives the wall a premium, built-in feel.
- Colour zones — separate RGB or RGBW zones for the TV recess, fire, and shelves, controlled independently so each section can be set differently for different occasions.
Common LED lighting mistakes on media walls
- Deciding on lighting after the build is done. The most common and most avoidable mistake. Adding lighting retrospectively means visible trunking, surface-mounted strips, or sections of the wall being cut open. Plan it at the start.
- Sticking strips directly to the wall or timber without channel profiles. Fine for temporary use; looks cheap once lit. Channel profiles with diffusers cost very little extra and make a significant visual difference.
- Mixing warm and cool white sources. 2700K strip behind the TV and 6000K puck lights in the alcoves is a combination that looks unsettled and is impossible to photograph well. Pick one temperature family and stick to it.
- Overcomplicating the controls. Full RGB with a multi-zone app controller sounds appealing in a showroom. In practice, if it takes more than three seconds to get the lights how you want them, you’ll stop using most of the features within a month.
- Not accounting for voltage drop. A long strip run without power injection will be noticeably brighter at the supply end. This is a wiring decision made at first-fix — it can’t be easily corrected once the wall is closed up.
FAQs
Can I add LED lighting to an existing media wall?
Yes, though the options depend on what access remains. Surface-mounted channel profiles can be fixed to the outside of the wall and are the most common retrofit approach. Recessed profiles — where the channel sits inside the wall — need the board to be cut back, which is more disruptive. For a truly clean finish, plan lighting at the build stage.
Do I need an electrician to install LED lighting?
Plug-in LED strips (running from a socket, not hardwired) don’t require an electrician. Hardwired installations — where the driver is wired directly into the lighting circuit — fall under Part P of the Building Regulations in England and Wales and should be done by a qualified electrician, or by an installer who is Part P certified. What’s the difference between 12V and 24V LED strips?
Both are low voltage and safe for residential use. 24V strips have lower voltage drop over longer runs, which means the brightness stays more even from end to end without power injection. For most media walls (where runs are rarely over 3–4 metres), either works fine. We tend to use 24V on larger builds as standard.
How long do LED strips last?
Quality LED strips are rated for 25,000–50,000 hours of use. At four hours per night, that’s 17–34 years. In practice the driver (transformer) and any controller hardware are more likely to need replacing before the strip itself.
Is RGB or white LED better for a media wall?
For most living rooms, white (2700K–3000K) is the better day-to-day choice. RGB adds versatility but the white mode on standard RGB strips is less clean than a dedicated white LED. If you want both, RGBW — which includes a dedicated white channel — gives you clean white everyday and full colour when you want it.
