Bespoke media walls across Sheffield, Doncaster, Wakefield & South Yorkshire

Modern media walls often feature sleek electric fires—but what if you prefer a real flame or a more classic look? A media wall with a traditional fireplace is 100% doable—you just need to balance warmth, safety and design. Below we’ll walk through the key decisions that make the blend work beautifully.

1. Decide on the Fire Type First

The fire dictates everything—from materials to ventilation.

  • Log burner: offers real flames, but needs a flue and 5”+ hearth clearance. Ideal for period homes.
  • Gas stove: cleaner to run, still needs ventilation and gas-safe fitting.
  • Traditional-style electric: flame effect only, but zero venting needed and full design freedom.

Once you’ve chosen, your wall layout and materials can follow.

2. Leave Room for Venting & Airflow

Real fires need air. We build vent channels inside the wall cavity and:

  • Leave 200 mm minimum side clearance for heat flow.
  • Use fire-rated boards or brick slips around the fire breast.
  • Never enclose a flue—always leave access for inspection and service.

TIP: Electric stoves still benefit from ventilation if paired with AV equipment in the same recess.

3. Choose Hearth & Surround Materials

The hearth anchors the space—visually and literally. Some classic combos:

  • Slate or riven stone: rustic, non-slip and heat-resistant.
  • Brick slips: red or whitewashed for a cottage-core finish.
  • Chunky oak beam: adds instant warmth above a stove cavity.

Match these with muted wall colours (greys, creams) to keep the TV from clashing.

4. Position the TV Carefully

Heat and screens don’t mix. For traditional fires:

  • Mount the TV at least 400–500 mm above the top of the fireplace.
  • Use a tilt bracket to reduce neck strain.
  • If wall height allows, split the zones—TV on the side return, fire centred.

Still want that flush stacked look? Choose an electric fire in a traditional style and reduce spacing to just 150 mm.

5. Use Built-In Alcoves for Log Storage & Style

You don’t need symmetrical storage. Try:

  • One open log store on the fire side with stacked kiln-dried oak.
  • Three floating shelves opposite, styled with ceramic pots and prints.
  • Black or charcoal finishes to match the fire frame.

Functional, warm and balanced—without losing the traditional feel.
